About Lebanon.

Lebanon is located in the Middle East. It is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the west, with a coastline of 225 kilometers. Lebanon is bordered by Syria to the north and east, and by Israel to the south. The Syrian-Lebanese border runs for 375 kilometers, and the Lebanese-Israel border – for 79 kilometers. With an area of 10452 square kilometers, Lebanon is the 161st-largest country in the world. A major part of Lebanon is covered by mountains, excluding the Beqaa Valley in the northeast and a narrow coastal plain stretching from north to south along the coastline. Inshore Lebanon is separated from the eastern regions by the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges. Population of Lebanon is estimated to be 4,468,007. Its capital is Beirut, population 1,251,739, major cities: Tripoli, population 229,398, Saida, population 163,554 and Tyre, population 135,204 Beirut – capital of the Lebanese Republic.

Beirut (arab. بيروت‎ Bayrūt, greek Βηρυττός, Bērytós, lat. Berytus, hebr. ‏ביירות‏ (Beirut), aram. בירות (Birot), fr. Beyrouth, turk. Beyrut) is the capital and the largest city of Lebanon. It is located on a peninsula at the midpoint of the Lebanon’s Mediterranean coastline and is the largest principle maritime port of the country. The Beirut Region consists of the capital city and its suburbs. The first historical mention of Beirut is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna archive, dated back to XV century BC. Beirut is Lebanon’s seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with most banks and corporations based in its Central District, Rue Hamra, Rue Verden and Ashrafieh. The city is the center of region’s cultural life, it is known for its press, theaters cultural activities and nightclubs.

Beirut is ranked as a “Beta” World City and was recognized as the best city to visit by “The New York Times” in 2009 and as one of ten most bustling cities by Lonely Planet in the same year. Beirut was also picked as the best city of the Middle East by Conde Nast Traveler in 2012. The Lebanese capital hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1959, FIBA Asia Champions Cup in 1999, 2000, 2012, the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup in 2000, and the FIBA Asian Cup in 2010. Beirut was the host city for the 6th annual games of the Francophonie in 2009. Beirut also hosted the Pan Arab Games in 1957, 1997, and 2015.
